The sammelan ended on Sunday, (1st November) afternoon, after three days of soulful music , much to the satisfaction of a cultivated audience, with a performance by vocalist Gauri Pathare. Her Lalita Gauri, a rarely heard raaga, was followed by Jaunpuri, Alhaiya Bilawal and four short pieces in a semiclassical mould. The ease with which she sang the higher notes spoke of her hard riyaz.She was accompanied on the Tabla by Dr. Paramjeet Singh and on the Harmonium by Paromita Mukherjee.
The previous evening had two outstanding performances. The highlights were a yugalbandi on the silver flute and the saxophone by the two Italian musicians, Virginia Nicoli and Igino Brunori. They were shining students at the conservatoire in Milan and found their calling in dhrupad music at the gurukul of the celebrated Gundecha brothers, Ramakant and Umakant at Bhopal. Their Yaman and Bhopali were rendered with amazing sense of combination. Young Sukhad Munde on the pakhavaj accompanied with great skill and aplomb. The Governor of Punjab and Haryana had found time to attend despite his busy schedule and blessed the artistes.
The Italian musicians were followed by Shashank Maktedar, a gifted vocalist who has sat at the feet of Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar and imbibed the best in Gwalior, Kirana and Jaipur Atrauli styles. He started with Raag Kamod and moved on to Adana , Bageshwari and concluded with a beautiful composition in Bhairavi.He has true pith and his Kamod was unforgettable. He was accompanied on the Tabla by Dr. Paramjeet Singh, and by Paromita Mukherjee on the Harmonium. On the opening day, Pt Harish Tewari sang Durga with good elaboration in a powerful voice , after which he sang a composition in Kedar and concluded with a beautiful bhajan – ‘Baje re muraliya baje’, which reminded one of his Guru, the late Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. The second artiste was Yashaswi Sirpotdar, a pupil of the great Padma Talwalkar. Gifted with a golden voice her Maru Behag and Chhayanat were much appreciated, and she concluded with a beautiful rendition of ‘Jab Jankinath sahaye kare’. She was accompanied on the Tabla by Mehmood Khan.
Great credit is due to Paromita Mukerjee who provided harmonium accompaniment to the vocalists. Her gentle playing is unobtrusive and accurate and her solo bits displayed mastery over different raagas and taals.
Our Sammelan commenced with a patriotic group song conducted by Mrs Vanita Dharmani . It was the hindi version of the very popular ‘Se je aamaar janam bhumi’. Her students brought out the sentiment very beautifully!

Our 37th Chandigarh Sangeet Sammelan concluded on the 26th of Oct. We had three sessions of soulful music presented by some well known artistes of the country. We had the pleasure of having a group of eight music lovers from Lahore, as part of our audience this time. Some of these members are a part of the Sanjan Nagar institute (Lahore), where we had taken our team from I N T to perform in March this year.
On day one, (24th of Oct.), the concert commenced with a vocal recital by Pt. Arvind Sharma. Pandit Arvind Sharma started his performance with Raag Nand – Vilambit khayal in Ektaal – ‘E Baare Saiyaan’, followed by a Drut Khayal in TeenTaal -‘ aju na aye Shyaam’ . After this he presented Raag Tilakamod (chota khyaal)- ‘koyaliya bole ambuwa” followed by another beautiful composition in Raag Kalavati. He concluded with Raag Malkauns – Ashtpadi in Raag Maulkauns -‘ Adya Smardam na Shankara’. He was accompanied by Paramjit Singh on the Tabla, Neeraj Gandhi on the harmonium, and both his sons Aditya and Adamya, gave him good vocal support. One of the members of the visiting group from Lahore, Dr. Gazala, honoured the artistes.
After Pt. Sharma’s vocal recital Anupama Bhagwat gave an enthralling Sitar recital starting with a Vilambit gat in Raag Jhinjhoti (Vilambit Ektaal), followed by a traditional medium tempo composition composed by the late Inayat Khan. The hard work put in by her, for perfect finger movement was evident in the way she beautifully rendered the Raag. She concluded with a Dhun in Raag Mishra Peelu. She was accompanied by Mahmood Khan on the Tabla. Another visiting member of the Lahore group , Qaasim Jaffri honoured the artistes.
On the second day of the Sammelan the audience was presented with scintillating vocal performances by Manjusha Patil and Shounak Abhisheki. Both the vocalists won applause from the audience through rendition of different ragas.
Manjusha Patil began her recital in Raag Bihag with a Vilambit composition in Ektaal – ‘Ae Ma Dhan Dhan re’ followed by a fast composition in Drut Teentaal. She continued with a beautiful composition set to Rupak taaal in Raag Sohni -‘ jiyara re’ followed by a Drut Teentaal composition. In her mellifluous voice she sang some complicated permutations with great ease. She concluded her recital with a beautiful traditional bhajan -‘Payo ji maine Ram ratan dhan payo’. She was accompanied by Avirbhav on the Tabla, Pramod Marathe on the Harmonium and Tarun Garg and Anandini on the Tanpuras. Dr. Athar Muhammad Masood honoured the artistes.
After this beautiful recital, Shounak Abhisheki presented a wonderful rendition of Raag Jaijaivanti..the Vilambit composition was set to Ektaal- ‘Kahan kal Vahi’, followed by a Drut composition in Ektaal ‘ bairan jaagi naveli’. He has imbibed the intricacies of his father’s (the late Jeetendra Abhisheki) gayaki. He concluded with a popular bhajan sung by his late father Jeetendra Abhisheki, ‘Shiv ke Mann sharan ho’. He was accompanied by Paramjit Singh on the Tabla, Paromita Mukherjee on the Harmonium and Tarun Garg and Ananadini on the Tanpuras. He was honoured by Tariq Jameel another distinguished visitor from Lahore.
The concluding day (26th morning), witnessed a beautiful flute yugalbandi by Suchismita and Debopriya. They presented two compositions in Raag Ahirbhairav followed by a lighter composition, which blended into a medley of devotional compositions. They were accompanied by Avirbhav on the tabla. One of the distinguished ladies ( from the Lahore group), Baela Jameel , honoured the artistes.
Before the second artiste presented her recital, Dr. V.C.Nanda, spoke a few warm words and recited some beautiful couplets in honour of our guests from Lahore after which Sh. Anil Nehru presented each visitor from Lahore , with a small gift from INT.
The second artiste for the morning was the well known Ashwini Bhide Deshpande. She started her recital with Raag Jaunpuri. Her first slow tempo composition was set to Vilambit Teentaal-‘ Sultan Auliya Peer Maan’ followed by a fast composition ‘Jhoolat Hindole Sakhiyan sang’ set to Teental followed by another fast tempo composition ‘ Payal Baajan Lagi Re Mori’ in Drut Teental.
She continued with two beautiful compositions in Raag Kukubh Bilawal. The first composition was in Madhyalaye (Jhaptaal) composed by the founder of her tradition, the late Aladiya Khan Sahib himself-‘Ghar aaj Dulha’ followed by a Drut Ektaal composition ‘Sab mil Gaao’.
She concluded with a Kabir bhajan. She was accompanied by Abirbhav on the Tabla, Paromita Mukherjee on the Harmonium, and her student Ashupreet on the Tanpuras. Gen.. V.P. Malik, ( former Chief of Army staff) , honoured the artistes.On the request of the President of Indian National Theatre Sh. N. Khosla, she sang ‘Vasihnav Jan toh tene kahiye’ and the artistes present there, joined her for a wonderful concluding message for all.
Indian National Theatre President Sh. Navjeevan Khosla, collaborated with Raza Kazim (Director) Sanjan Nagar Institute of Philosophy and Arts presented a Three day Sangeet Sammelan in Lahore from the 7th to the 9th of March, 2014.The Sammelan featured renowned artistes from India and also Sanjan Nagar’s in-house artistes, who performed as a prelude to the guests.

It was indeed a memorable experience for all those who participated and witnessed this event. The loving hospitality all the members from India received, was something to be cherished for years to come. Sanjan Nagar Institute which is functioning under Raza Kazim’s leadership, is worth a mention.
As quoted in their brochure- “The object of the Institute is to discover and establish through knowledge, reason and verification, a framework of theory and practice in an effort to contribute towards a new and superior civilization emerging in our time”- which was very evident during our visit to the Institute.

Our 36th Annual Sangeet Sammelan, in collaboration with the Department of cultural affairs Haryana , concluded successfully on the 27th of Oct.2013.
On the first day (25th of Oct.) the audience witnessed two performances. We started the evening concert with a melodious flute recital by Debopriya Chatterjee and Suchismita (both disciples of the legendary Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia ). Justice Gupta was requested to honour the artistes. They started their performance with a beautiful ‘badhat’ in Raag Jog. The ‘Vilambit’ composition was set to Jhaptaal, followed by a ‘Drut’ composition in Teentaal. The sound ‘taleem’ they have received from their Guru, was very evident in the way they presented the Raag. The ‘alaap’ was interwoven with fast moving note permutations which made their performance interesting for even those who did not understand too much about classical music. Their co-ordination was also worth appreciating. They concluded their performance with a Bengali folk ‘dhun’, which again was very appealing , and left the audience asking for more!
They were accompanied by Jaidev on the tabla.
The second performance was a vocal recital by Ranjani Ramachandran. She started her recital with a ‘Vilambit’ composition in Raag Nand, set to ‘Vilambit Teentaal’-‘Dhoondhe bare saiyan’, followed by a ‘drut’ composition in ‘Drut Ektaal’ which was composed by the late Pt.Ramashreya Jha – ‘Nand ghar anand ki badhai’. She elaborated on the fine nuances of the Raag, thus bringing out the flavour of Nand very beautifully and appropriately. Her soft, melodious voice was appealing and she definitely justified the ‘vidya’ received from both her Gurus – Ulhas Kashalkar and Veena Sahastrabudhe. After Nand, she sang two compositions in Raag Bageshwari – one set to ‘Teentaal’ – ‘Piharava ghar aavo’, and the other set to ‘Drut Ektaal -‘Vaegi vaegi aavo’. She concluded her recital with a Kabir bhajan in Raag Bhairavi, which had been composed by the late Pt. Kashinath Shankar Bodas – ‘Aaunga na jaaunga’. She was accompanied by Vinay Mishra on the Harmonium, Vinod Lele on the Tabla, and Neetu and Tarun Garg on the Tanpuras.
The compering for the evening concert was done by Nirupama Kishore. Before closing for the evening, we paused for a few seconds in silence, paying a tribute to the legendary singer – Mannadey ji, who passed away just a day before the concert. His contribution to the music world, not only towards film music, but also Raag based songs were remembered with great reverence.
Day 2 (26th Oct.) presented two vocal recitals. The first one was a beautiful rendition of Raag Shudh Kalyan by Nivedita Singh from Patiala. Pt. Ganesh Prasad was requested to honour the artistes. She started with a ‘Vilambit’ composition set to ‘Vilambit Ektaal’- ‘Jab hi ghar aave ‘followed by a ‘Madhya laya’ composition in ‘Panjabi Teentaal’ – ‘Ayo re man meetava’. She concluded the raag with a ‘Drut Khayal’ in ‘Drut Teentaal’ – ‘Aeri aali’. She continued her performance with a ‘Madhya laya’ composition in Jhaptaal in an unusual raag called ‘Khokhar’ – ‘Aaj anand mukh chandra’. It was a sweet sounding raag which had a mixed flavour of various ragas. She concluded this raag with a ‘Tarana’ in ‘Jhaptaal’. After this, on the request of her Guru, Pt. Ganesh Prasad ji, she sang one composition in Raag ‘Kaunsi Kanhda’ – ‘Banat ban aave’ set to ‘Teentaal’. She did full justice to the ‘Taaleem’ she has received from him. She presents a clear pitched voice with a purity of intention. She concluded her recital with a ‘Shabad’ from the ‘Gurbani’ – ‘Ram son kar preet re’, set to ‘Rupak taal’. Her sweet voice and beautiful rendition left the audience asking for more! She was accompanied on the Tabla by Jaidev and Vinay Mishra on the Harmonium. Amneet and Khushpreet accompanied her on the Tanpuras.
The second vocalist for the evening was Pt. Ganapati Bhat from Dharvar (Hasanagi). Representing Gwalior and Kairana gharana and being the disciple of (Late) Basavrao Rajguru, Pandit ji’s recital was indeed very much awaited. We had the hall almost full. Sh. R.S. Mittal (a senior lawyer of the High court) was requested to honour the artistes. He started with a ‘Vilambit khayal’ in Raag Shyam kalyan set to ‘Vilambit Ektaal’- ‘Neend na aavat piya’, followed by a ‘Madhya laya’ composition in ‘Teentaal’-‘Mora man har leenho’, and another one in ‘Drut Ektaal’- ‘Ja ja re jare’. One could see how effortlessly he was developing the raag and weaving beautiful note combinations and ‘layakari’. He continued his performance with another beautiful rendition of a ‘Madhya laya’ composition in Raag Desh -‘Tero hi dhyan dharat hoon’, set to ‘Teentaal’, followed by a Tarana in ‘Drut Ektaal’. He concluded with a ‘Madhya laya’ composition in Teentaal in Raag Bhopali-‘Tarapat raen dina’. His performance was a spiritually uplifting experience for some and definitely mesmerizing for all.
He was accompanied by Vinod Lele on the Tabla and Vinay Mishra on the Harmonium. Tarun Garg and Neetu Garg accompanied him on the Tanpuras. The evening session was compered by Nirupama Kishore.
Day Three(27th Oct.) was a morning session presenting Pt. Ganapati Bhat again, with the keen desire to hear some morning ragas by him. He started his recital with a Raag which is very special to their gharana – Raag Nat Bhairav. His first rendition was in ‘Vilambit Ektaal’-‘Goonj rahe’. Followed by a ‘Drut khayal’ in Teentaal-‘ Baaje damaru dum Shiv nache’. It was indeed beautifully rendered. After this, he continued his recital with Raag Jaunpuri. He sang two compositions – the first one was in ‘Madhya laya’-‘Payal baajan laage’ followed by the very popular ‘Choom chanan bichhua’, both compositions were set to Teentaal. He brought out the flavour of the raag very appropriately. He continued with a Meera bhajan-‘Raghunandan aage nachungee’. He concluded with Raag Bhairavi – first a bhajan – ‘Mero man Ramhi Ram ratei re’, followed by a Tarana in Teentaal. He proved to the audience what a great teacher his Guru must have been and how beautifully he imbibed his Guru’s ‘gayaki’ and’Taaleem’.
He was accompanied by Vinod Lele on the Tabla and Vinay Mishra on the Harmonium. Neetu Garg and Tarun Garg accompanied him on the Tanpuras. The morning session was compered by Vinita Gupta.

Our thirty – fifth annual Sangeet Sammelan concluded on the 28th of Nov.2012. The Sammelan started on the 26th evening with an invocation (Shabd gayan) by Rupinder Kaur from Dehradun. She sang with true devotional fervor bringing out the essense of the verses from the Gurbani set to their original ragas and talas.She was given appropriate accompaniment by Gautam Dhar on the tabla, Vinay Mishra on the harmonium and Ruchika on the tanpura. This was followed by Biswajit Roy Chowdury’s ‘Sarod vadan’. He played Raga Yaman Kalyan, a very appropriate raga for that time of the day. He developed the raga with great expertise and creative innovation. His ‘meend pradhan vistaar’ was the attraction of his performance. He was accompanied very ably by Avirbhav on the tabla.The ‘sandhya’ concluded with Smt. Piu Sarkhel’s vocal recital. She started her performance with Raga Rageshwari followed by Raga Hansadhwani. She is one of the very few female performers to be following the Indore gharana gayaki, which was very beautifully presented in her presentation of both the ragas. She has a good stage presence and her concluding bhajan, which was a tribute to her late father and guru, Sh. Kamal Bandhopadhyay, moved to tears many a listener. She was accompanied by Vinay Mishra on the harmonium, Dr. Paramjit Singh on the tabla, Mamta and Madhu on the tanpuras.
The 27th evening started with Smt.Padma Talwalkar’s vocal recital. Her first presentation was Raga Kedar, followed by Raga Abhogi and Raga Chayanat. She has had the good fortune of learning from great gurus who belonged to different gharanas, due to which she has innovated her own blend of Jaipur – Atrauli, Gwalior, Agra and Kirana gharana, which was a very beautifully created style, and was applauded by one and all. She was accompanied by Chinmaya Kolhatkar on the harmonium, Mayank Bedekar on the tabla,Mamta and Ruchika on the tanpuras. Her student Yashaswi Sirpotdar gave her very good vocal support.She was followed by Pt. Suresh Talwalkar’s Tabla ensemble. He had with him on stage, his daughter Savani Talwalkar(tabla), Mayank Bedekar(tabla), Omkar Dalvi(pakhawaj), Ojas-ji(vocals), Chinmaya Kolhatkar(harmonium). He started his presentation with Jhaptaal followed by Teentaal. It was very heartening to hear the wonderful synchronization between all the artistes on stage. One could see the effort put in by Pt.Suresh Talwalkar in teaching his entire team members and also his own level of expertise!
On the concluding morning of the 28th, Padma Talwalkar presented a beautiful rendition of Raga Bilaskhani Todi, after which she presented Raga Alhaiya-Bilawal which was equally beautifully rendered. She went on to the very popular composition in Raga Shudh- Sarang ‘ab mori baat’ and concluded with the much awaited bhajan ‘Mharo Pranam Banke Bihari ji’. A truly divine experience for the listeners and a very apt ‘finale’ to the Sammelan!

The monsoon treat organised by our society on the 9th of August definitely proved to be a treat not only to the eyes, but also to the well-being of our region, as it brought with it the long awaited monsoon rains! Daksha Mashruwala, an undoubted Orissi dancer ‘par excellence’ started her recital with a beautifully choreographed invocation to Lord Vishnu in her expression of the ‘Dash-avtaar’. She had with her a group of four well trained students, who enhanced the beauty of her entire performance.Her musicians also deserve a special mention..

Daksha ji performed for approximately two hours and concluded with a beautiful composition dedicated to the five elements. She also danced to ‘Vaishnav jan toh’, one of Gandhi ji’s favourite bhajans with such abandon..was truly ‘Divine!’. We were fortunate enough to have with us well known classical singers from the northern region – Dr.Nivedita Singh, Dr.Alankar Singh and Dr. Gurinder Harnam Singh , who were gracious enough to lend their beautiful voices in the rendition of the bhajan, as a special tribute to Sh. Navjivan Khosla.
This day was a special day for us all, as, it happened to be the 90th birthday of our esteemed President, Sh. Navjivan Khosla, whose contribution to the growth of Indian National Theatre is in-expressible in words! We all pray that the Lord blesses him with a long ,happy ,healthy life ahead !

Indian National Theatre recently conducted its 34th annual Chandigarh Sangeet Sammelan at Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan, Chandigarh from November 4th to November 6th.
Eminent musicians participated in the Programme. It started with opening remarks by Shri Vijai Vardhan, about Pt. Mallikarjun Mansur whose birth centenary was being celebrated this year. It was followed by Sitar Vaadak Dhruv Bedi and Vocalist Subhadra Desai.
